Harry and Meghan are Like Many Celebrity Podcast Failures

In a world where fame can be fleeting, celebrities are constantly seeking ways to stay relevant and maintain their connection with the public. Many believe that podcasting offers a simple avenue to achieve this difficult to maintain goal. However, as demonstrated by the recent Spotify debacle involving Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Audio, podcasting success is far from guaranteed for even the biggest celebrity names.

When Spotify announced its partnership with Archewell Audio, expectations were high for a long-lasting and prosperous alliance. The $20 million deal signed in 2020 promised a plethora of “uplifting” audio projects, but it all resulted in just one show: Markle’s Archetypes. This feminist-leaning podcast aimed to challenge stereotypes and empower women but received only lukewarm reviews. With just 12 episodes released, the show failed to create the buzz that was anticipated.

The response to the termination of the Spotify deal was harsh, with some commentators questioning the relevancy of Harry and Meghan’s opinions outside the realm of the royal family. This incident exposed the challenges celebrities face in maintaining public interest and relevance, even when exploring new platforms like podcasting.

Markle’s struggle is not an isolated case. Numerous high-profile celebrities have attempted to capitalize on the podcast boom, only to find themselves surrendering their half-baked audio projects in defeat. The podcast landscape is now filled with celeb-hosted shows that often devolve into meandering discussions about trivial subjects, failing to capture the audience’s attention.  Worse still many are little more than informercials – about themselves!

For instance, “In Bed With Nick & Megan,” co-hosted by celebrity couple Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, seemed like a promising idea. The show followed the popular format of two famous people engaging in candid conversations. However, despite creative efforts to add intimacy and personal topics, the podcast fizzled out within a year.

Even powerhouses like Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen struggled to maintain momentum with their podcast “Renegades: Born in the USA.” The show, which offered discussions on American struggles and the open road, failed to captivate audiences beyond a few episodes.

Similarly, Alicia Silverstone’s wellness podcast, “The Real Heal,” failed to resonate with listeners despite her iconic status from her role in “Clueless.” The content’s lackluster nature caused the podcast to fade away without much fanfare.

Other podcasting misfires include “Women of the Hour” with Lena Dunham, “Bunny Ears” with Macaulay Culkin, “Prinze and the Wolf” with Freddie Prinze Jr., and “3 Girls, 1 Keith” with Amy Schumer. Each of these attempts at podcasting by prominent celebrities ended in disappointment, revealing the challenges of finding the right formula to connect with listeners.

Lindsay Lohan’s podcast, “The Lohdown With Lindsay Lohan,” suffered a similar fate. Despite interviewing notable guests, Lohan’s lack of genuine interest and connection with her guests left the show feeling unengaging and superficial. As evidenced by the harsh critique from Apple Podcasts commenters, celebrity names alone cannot carry a podcast to success.

The underlying problem with these failed podcasting attempts is often a lack of genuine investment. To succeed in this medium, celebrities must have a true passion for their chosen topics or be able to carry the show on their own merits. Podcasting demands authenticity and a genuine connection with the audience, qualities that cannot be faked.  It becomes obvious when the show is nothing more than a desperate effort for relevancy.

For some, podcasting is simply a side venture or a way to generate additional publicity or revenue without a real commitment to the art of podcasting. However, the graveyard of abandoned celebrity podcasts serves as a stark reminder that podcasting success requires more than just big names attached to the projects.

In a world where fame can be transient, celebrities are constantly searching for ways to maintain their relevance and capture the public’s attention. Podcasting has emerged as a popular avenue for celebrities to express their thoughts, share their experiences, and connect with fans on a more personal level. It offers a platform where they can engage directly with their audience, bypassing traditional media channels and potentially igniting meaningful conversations.

However, the podcasting landscape is highly competitive, with thousands of shows vying for listeners’ attention. In such a saturated market, having a famous name attached to a podcast is no guarantee of success. While initial curiosity may attract some listeners, the sustained growth and popularity of a podcast depend on the quality and authenticity of its content.

Many celebrities make the mistake of underestimating the medium of podcasting. They may approach it as a side project or a quick way to monetize their fame, without fully understanding the nuances and demands of the format. This often leads to lackluster shows that fail to resonate with audiences.

Successful podcasts thrive on compelling storytelling, engaging discussions, and a genuine connection with the audience. It requires hosts who are passionate about their topics, knowledgeable in their fields, and dedicated to delivering high-quality content consistently. A celebrity’s name can provide initial attention, but it is the substance and value of the podcast that will keep listeners coming back for more.

The allure of podcasting lies in its intimate nature. Listeners tune in to hear authentic voices, unique perspectives, and thought-provoking conversations. They want to feel a connection with the hosts and gain insights that go beyond what they might find in traditional media interviews. For celebrities, this means going beyond their fame and opening up on a more personal level. It requires vulnerability, honesty, and a willingness to share experiences that resonate with listeners.

Moreover, podcasting requires dedication and a long-term commitment. Building an audience takes time and consistent effort. It is not enough to release a few episodes and expect instant success. Engaging with listeners, responding to feedback, and continuously improving the show are essential for its growth and longevity.

While some celebrities have successfully transitioned into the world of podcasting, their achievements should not overshadow the numerous failures that litter the podcasting landscape. It is crucial for celebrities to approach podcasting with the same level of dedication and professionalism they bring to their other ventures.

While podcasting can offer an avenue for celebrities to maintain relevance and connect with their audience, it is not a guaranteed path to success. Fame alone is not enough to sustain a podcast in an increasingly competitive market. Genuine passion, engaging content, and a commitment to quality are paramount. Podcasting requires effort, authenticity, and a deep understanding of the medium to truly captivate listeners and stand out in the vast sea of podcasts.
