Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, welcomed Gitte Madelaire to provide another commentary in a series.

The Gitte Madelaire Commentaries

Money, money, money, makes the world go around sings Liza Minelli but is that really the truth.

Welcome to the eighth article in the series “Be the Leader You Aspire to Be” here on The Price of Business Show, where I will focus on the trends which lie ahead of us and how they will affect humans and businesses. The articles are based on my book Energetic Leadership, which talks about 9 trends leaders must navigate to cater for employees increasing demand for more spiritual leadership and sustainable business models aligned with their life purposes. These articles are about business leadership in the new era. I hope you will find inspiration for your own leadership and the leader you aspire to be.

The first article outlined 9 trends for business leadership and focused on authentic curiosity as a key competency for leaders to master. The second and third articles explained the concept of energy frequencies as the source of our true potential, followed by the alignment of the company purpose with the life purposes of employees and customers. The fourth covered the 6-5 different generations currently working, the fifth focused on self-care and the ability to be present and the sixth about uncertainty and how to navigate in it. The seventh talked about the importance of intuition in decision-making.

In the eighth article we will look at what economy really is, apart from money and black bottom lines.

Running a company or a society is not only about the economy, though economic factors are a critical component. A successful company and a thriving country require a holistic approach that integrates various dimensions.

Why is it that when we run a company or a country, we need to be holistic? In these times with permacrisis it should be obvious. Everything is connected. But it is not obvious, and we do not act in a holistic way.

If one part of a chain is broken; we do not have a chain that’s working. If nature is talking with big words as we are experiencing, it is because something is wrong. If people are getting more and sick and are making more and more riots or demonstrations, it is two ways of showing that something is wrong. If stakeholders and investors are questioning all the short-term visions, it is worth taking them serious too. There are so many signs of how we as citizens, humans, customers try to communicate how we think the economical language should be and what the focus must be.

Here’s an overview of what our focus should be other than just the economic dimension:

Social Dimension

Employee Welfare: Ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for growth.

Corporate Culture: Building a positive, inclusive, and motivating work environment.

Community Impact: Acting responsibly toward the community through outreach and support.

Environmental Dimension

Sustainability: Adopting eco-friendly practices, reducing carbon footprints, and managing resources responsibly.

Regulatory Compliance: Meeting environmental laws and guidelines.

Ethical and Governance Dimension

Corporate Ethics: Upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability.

Diversity and Inclusion: Promoting equitable opportunities for all.

Good Governance: Establishing effective leadership, decision-making structures, and risk management.

Innovation and Creativity

Product/Service Development: Continuously improving offerings to meet evolving customer needs.

Adapting to Change: Innovating in response to market shifts, technological advancements, and global trends.

Stakeholder Relationships

Customer Satisfaction: Building trust and loyalty through quality products, services, and communication.

Investor Relations: Keeping shareholders informed and ensuring returns on their investments.

Partnerships: Collaborating with other businesses and stakeholders for mutual benefit.

Long-term Vision

Mission and Values: Staying aligned with the company’s purpose beyond profits.

Legacy Building: Planning for sustainability and growth over decades, not just immediate gains.

Economic Dimension

Revenue and Profit: Generating income and maintaining profitability are essential for sustainability.

Cost Management: Efficient use of resources and controlling expenses are key.

Market Competitiveness: Understanding market dynamics, pricing strategies, and consumer demand.

In conclusion, while economic considerations are the foundation, they are interconnected with social, environmental, ethical, and strategic factors. A successful and holistic company strikes a balance among these to achieve sustainable growth and positive impact.

We already see that in Europe (EU only) where all companies measure and report on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) parameters.

I hope you got some insight to that economy is so much more than money in the long term. Wish you all the best going forward.
