The Gitte Madelaire Commentaries
Welcome to the fifth article in the series “Be the Leader You Aspire to Be” here on The Price of Business Show, where I will focus on the trends which lie ahead of us and how they will affect humans and businesses. The articles are based on my book Energetic Leadership, which talks about 9 trends leaders must navigate to cater for employees increasing demand for more spiritual leadership and sustainable business models aligned with their life purposes. These articles are about business leadership in the new era. I hope you will find inspiration for your own leadership and the leader you aspire to be.
The first article outlined 9 trends for business leadership and focused on authentic curiosity as a key competency for leaders to master. The second and third articles explained the concept of energy frequencies as the source of our true potential, followed by the alignment of the company purpose with the life purposes of employees and customers. The fourth covered the 6-5 different generations currently working. These four articles put focus on the ability to be curious and have awareness – important future competencies.
In the fifth article we will look at being present. Why is presence suddenly a power tool, what does it mean to be present and how is an organization present.
I want to start in Cali in Columbia, where COP 16 the UN’s global biodiversity summit took place in October with the theme: Making Peace with Nature. Nature is our home and cannot withstand our pressure and abuse on Mother Earth any longer. We have come to a tipping point where 6 out of 9 planetary boundaries have been exceeded. Luckily there is still a lot we can do and lots of potential to unleash to help us be prepared for the turbulence we are approaching and for the life afterwards. We literally must buckle-up now. We must learn/relearn new tools and get new habits, which is both awesome and scary.
To be present is a state of being. When we are present in what we are doing, we enjoy the doing. If we are not enjoying what we are doing, then we are not present. So, presence is a state of being, a state of mind and of our consciousness.
The reason there is so much focus on being present is that our societies, organizations, and lives are running like high-speed trains and humans are not geared for that. We get stressed and sick. So, we must calm down our nervous systems. One way of doing that is by learning to be present. We often talk about it as being in the now, as it is only the now that counts. Not the past, it is already gone, and the future has not happened yet. So, the now is where we should be.
It is challenging to be present. We must have a relaxed breathing and be focused on whatever we are doing not with our thoughts running in all directions. When we are calm and present, we are in what many call flow – we enjoy what we are doing, and it feels easy even if it something is difficult. Our soul, body and mind are connected, and it calls us forward.
There are many ways to train our presence, and we must all find our own way. It is no use trying to copy others because what they are doing might not be what you are seeking. Selfcare in any way is the way forward and it could be eating a healthy diet, exercise, get enough sleep, do breathwork, meditate, spend time in nature and with people you love. It all helps to increase dopamine oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins which we crave as humans.
Leaders in organizations play a huge role in creating environments that physically and psychologically safe for their employees and their wellbeing so they can use their energy on being present in the job they are to carry out. An organization is present when all breathe normally and enjoy their work.
Selfcare is the power tool of the modern business world and the most important thing we all can do to support our lives, families, the organizations and societies. Though it is easier said than done, as we can all get a leg brace by life, a helping hand from others will always be of big value.
By being present we unite with Nature.
I hope you got some insight to support your way of being present.
