The Second Great Passions That Block Our Path to Success

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Karma Yoga, a transformative path, offers us hope and inspiration. It teaches us that we are here in this life to work through the four great passions, which, according to Karma, cause all the world’s problems. We reincarnate so that we might work through these four lessons, with one being more intense in our lives than the other. This journey is not about condemnation but about transformation and growth.

The first great passion is deceit, and the second is Greed.

Greed is a passion from which most of us recoil. No one likes to think of themselves as being greedy, and yet each of us, on some level, has been consumed by Greed. When we think of Greed, we usually think of avarice or excessive hoarding of money and material things. Greed, however, is more. It is a fixation upon acquiring or hanging onto objects of sensory pleasure and gratification—for example, alcohol, food, or material possessions.

Greed leads us to harm others and ourselves. In yoga, we succumb to Greed when we push ourselves beyond our limits while performing a particular asana (pose). This can lead to self-injury as we strive to keep up with the teacher or surpass other students. We must pause our practice and heal when injuries disrupt our evolution and growth.

Greed imprisons our time, emotions, and energy. If we removed Greed from our human physical, verbal, and intellectual selves, we would remove violence, dishonesty, and theft. Greed is a mighty force, but we are not defenseless. We are equipped and prepared to combat it with awareness, balance, strength, flexibility, and humility. These are the tools that will help us overcome this powerful force.

Unselfishness, the polar opposite of Greed, is a force of transformation. When we give without any expectation of receiving, we rise above Greed. This act of giving is not about destroying wealth but about freeing ourselves from the clutches of Greed. It’s a liberating experience that can reshape our perspective and bring us closer to our true selves, empowering us to live more freely and authentically and freeing us from the chains of Greed.

The ego, a significant player in Greed, is not about accumulating things or money. It’s about our fear of inadequacy, our resistance to seeing others surpass us. This sense of disempowerment compels us to greedily cling to what we perceive as the most significant aspect of our identity: the ego. Recognizing and overcoming this ego-driven Greed is crucial in our journey toward unselfishness and contentment.

One key concept of non-greed is being content with what comes into and goes out of your life. Doing so quiets your mind, and more positive energy flows through your body, mind, and soul. You are now working your Karma and on the road to success, feeling at peace and in control of your journey.

In my Book, How to Master Your Karma, there is a section where you can look up your birthdate and find what the kabala (Jewish mysticism) calls your Tukem, or your correction, which falls in line with the four great passions of Karma.

Namaste ~ May you walk the path of life with health, happiness, and peace.
