A student suspect is in custody after a deadly shooting at the University of Virginia on Sunday night. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and authorities do not yet know the motive for the attack. The suspect, who is believed to be a former UVA football player, has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. ET on a university charter bus that was carrying students and staff back from a field trip or play.

Authorities have identified the three victims, all students at the University of Virginia. The three victims were Devin Chandler, a second-year student from Virginia Beach. His brother, Devin Davis, is a third-year student from Ridgeville. The other victim, a fourth-year student from Miami, is in critical condition. The shooting took place at the University of Virginia’s campus near the campus drama building.

The suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones, was listed as a football player on the University of Virginia’s athletics website. He also attended Petersburg and Varina high schools and was a member of the National Technical Honor Society. The suspect was arrested off campus, but authorities did not specify his location. Authorities issued a “shelter in place” order for students and staff. This was lifted after a thorough search of the campus.

According to the UVA President, all three victims were students. The victims were all football players. The names of the deceased were released later Monday. The other two victims were found injured. One of them was in critical condition. The UVA Office of Emergency Management tweeted that the students were returning from a field trip to see a play.
