The Denise Billen-Mejia Commentaries

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sharon Waxkirsh, a highly experienced hypnotherapist with over 20 years of practice. Our conversation aimed to shed light on the application of hypnosis in medical, surgical, and dental settings.

Sharon, like many of my guests, emphasizes that hypnosis is not about controlling someone’s mind. Instead, it involves accessing the subconscious and harnessing its power for healing and transformation. By delving into this deeper level of awareness, individuals can effectively address a range of issues, including anxiety, phobias, and chronic pain.

Sharon highlights that it is often the patient who initiates the hypnosis process. She discusses common situations where patients seek complementary methods to cope with fears and anxieties associated with medical procedures, such as anesthesia phobia and needle phobia. Hypnotherapy can offer a safe and effective approach to address these concerns,  providing many patients with greater comfort and ease throughout their treatment.

Research reveals that hypnosis can accelerate the healing process for surgical patients. In some cases, healing times have been shown to be up to six times faster when hypnosis is utilized before, during, or after procedures. Additionally, hypnosis has proven effective in alleviating chronic pain syndromes that may arise following surgery, offering patients long-lasting relief.

Unfortunately, the dissemination of this information to the medical community has been slow, resulting in limited appropriate training opportunities.  Sharon, recognizing this need, was a co-founder of the Institute of Hypnotherapy for Medical and Dental Practice. This institute offers specialized training for healthcare professionals, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to integrate hypnotherapy successfully into medical practice.

By accessing the subconscious mind, hypnosis provides a unique approach to address concerns, anxieties, and pain, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes. Organizations like the Institute of Hypnotherapy for Medical and Dental Practice play a crucial role in providing specialized training, enabling more healthcare professionals to recognize the benefits of hypnotherapy. As hypnosis continues to advance, patients can anticipate more comprehensive and holistic approaches to their medical and dental care, resulting in enhanced overall well-being and quality of life.
